Camden Snow Bowl Middle School teams continue to improve

Tue, 01/20/2015 - 4:45pm

AUBURN — The Camden Snow Bowl Middle School race teams participated in three races this past weekend at Lost Valley Ski Resort in Auburn, Maine. The Otto Memorial Slalom race and the Otto Memorial Giant slalom race took place on Saturday, while Sunday was the J.P. Parisienne slalom race.

Despite the lack of training opportunities, the teams are fairing extremely well against tough competition and weather. This weekend started out at -4 degrees at the top of the mountain and finished with steady rain and 40 degrees.

The challenging slalom race was set on a short course. The Camden teams attacked the course aggressively, resulting in some spectacular falls. The girls team came in fourth place with 51 points behind Spruce (48), Maranacook (43) and Farmington Area Ski Team (16). Auburn came in 5th with (78), followed by Oxford Hills (115), and Scarborough and Sugarloaf area ski teams. The boys finished fifth losing many of the competitors to falls.

“Lost Valley is not a big hill and you can see the finish from the start, and these kids said to themselves I want to ski fast — which is great — but I think they learned a lot about race tactics today,” said Weber Roberts, the Middle School coach.

Team points for the boys were Farmington Area Ski Team (22), Oxford Hills (43), Maranacook (52), Auburn (54), Camden (75), Spruce (122), Sugarloaf Area Ski Team (No Score) and Scarborough (No Score).

Girls slalom results (combined time for two runs):

Vika Santoro 59.22 (10)

Courtney King 1:00.40 (13)
Sydney White 1:01.53 (17)
Annika Charland 1:06.21 (22)
Annabelle Williams 1:08.80 (27)
Ella Ardizori 1:10.97 (30)

Boys slalom results (combined time for two runs):

Emerson Brott 58.35 (13)
Rhys White 1:00.18 (19)
Michael Frampton 1:01.03 (21)
Oscar Horovitz 1:02.10 (22)
Caellen Roberts 1:02.41 (24)
Devon Smith 1:04.03(27)
Noah LaChance 1:12.24 (30)
Ethan Andrus 1:23.32(39)

The girls and boys fared much better in the Giant Slalom portion of the Otto Memorial. In an extremely short course the girls and boys treated it like training because they haven’t had a chance to train GS at all this year due to the limited snow.

The girls improved their position to third with a strong performance by Annika Charland who skied into the fourth spot with a very confident run.

Results: Farmington Area Ski Team (16), Spruce (40), Camden (52), Maranacook ( 54), Auburn (99), Oxford Hills (132), Scarborough (144), SAST (No Score).

The boys improved their results and moved into the second spot with help from Simon Fedarko in his first race back on the team. Michael Frampton, Caellen Roberts and Cedar Andrus, the top three scorers were separated by a mere three-tenths of a second and finished sixth, seventh and eighth. Farmington Area Ski Team finished first with 28 points, Camden (34), Maranacook (53), Oxford Hills (56), Auburn (57), Spruce (135), SAST and Scarborough no score.
