Camden Snow Bowl middle school ski team takes home seven ribbons in season opener

RUMFORD — The first alpine and nordic ski meet for the Camden Snow Bowl middle school race team is in the books as the team competed at Rumford’s Black Mountain Monday, Jan. 15.

The Chisholm Challenge, a Class A middle school meet against Auburn, Maranacook, Mountain Valley, Oxford Hills, Farmington, Chisolm Ski Club, and Rangeley tested the skiers in both giant slalom and alpine freestyle.

The Camden team has been hampered in training by extremely cold temperatures for most of December and early January, followed by a rain event that wiped out the nordic training and much of the hill space at the Camden Snow Bowl, according to a press release about the team.

“This team is resilient and super motivated,” said coach Weber Roberts. “We have almost a completely new team of kids from last year that are super motivated to ski and to compete.  We have only been able to train slalom so far this year, due to limited hill space and very little Nordic, due to the temperatures — but it didn’t matter to the kids at all — they went out today with a lot of grit and muscled through some unknown terrain to post respectable results.”

Much of the state has experienced similar snow conditions, and most mountains have been struggling to pull together quality events, but Black Mountain and the Chisholm Ski Club had a terrific race with over 100 middle school age competitors, according to the release.

The Camden girls and boys both finished second in the season opener with Camden skimeisters taking home seven ribbons.

On the girls side, Abigail Williams finished fourth, closely followed by Charlotte Taylor in fifth. On the boys side, Camden nearly swept the ribbons with Ryan Southworth finishing in second, Alistair Levitt third, Landon Marquis in fourth, Ian Larson in fifth and Oliver Castle in sixth.
