Camden Snow Bowl middle school race

Tue, 02/02/2016 - 10:00am

CAMDEN The Camden Snow Bowl middle school skiers were back in action this past weekend at the Camden Snow Bowl. Competing in the first home meet in over six years, the middle school schussers proved once again to have a deep field of talent. The boys took first-place in the alpine slalom race.

In its debut, the new competition hill, "Half Hitch," proved to be a terrific venue. Despite the super warm temperatures and lack of natural snow, the Camden Snow Bowl staff were able to create a great race. "The mountain groomers worked really hard to get the mountain ready, this race is meant as a test for the state meet, happening in less than 2 weeks, and it will be the first time that a state Jr. Ski League championship has been held on the Midcoast for many, many years." said race director Jen Conover on a news release, "We are so pleased to be able to highlight our coaches and mountain to the state of Maine."

The sun was out and the mountain looked really festive. Over 120 competitors from six race programs around the state participated in the meet. The athletes were treated to a sneak preview of the Toboggan Nationals and got to give the Toboggan Chute a go after the race.

Micheal Frampton, eighth grader, from the Camden Snow Bowl beat out 60 boys to take the top spot in a combined time of 57.72, Robbie McKee from Maranacook was second and Jordan Bell, also of Maranacook took third. "The course was 100 percent man-made and very hard, which makes for a great race for those with high lines and quick feet, those that weren't aggressive were sliding through their turns, classic New England ski racing," said coach Weber Roberts. "Emerson Brott cracked the top ten and came in ninth with a couple of really gutsy runs, late in the order, and Oscar Horowitz continued his march upward into the top spots. Rhys White rounded out the scoring and their combined points (31) just edged out Maranacook (34)."It has been cat and mouse with these two teams all season. The State meet should be a real pressure cooker." said Asst. Coach Mike White.

The girls team also fared well, but were unable to get a team score because they have only three members. Katie Ide, Maranacook, finished first with a combined time of 1:04.95 followed by Miranda Chadbourne of Auburn. Dana Reynold of Maranacook took third. Isabelle Manahan finished fifth for the Snow Bowl, Annabelle Williams finished 21st and Charlotte Taylor had a terrific race in and finished 34th.
