Camden slows traffic to fix sewer line; no parking on Main Street

The Town of Camden issued the following press release Thursday morning, Aug. 18, at 8 a.m.:

“Please note that there is construction work being done to replace a failed lateral sewer line located at 21 Main Street. The lateral line is a private line that serves three buildings.

“Unfortunately, the problem at 21 Main St. is an emergency situation. The sewer lateral failed. The lateral line connects a building to the public sewer line. The lateral pipe is the responsibility of the building owner. The line that failed serves three buildings. The pipe couldn't be repaired temporarily and had to be replaced now since the three buildings are without bathroom services and the water to those buildings had to be shut off.

“Ferraiolo Construction is doing the work to replace the pipe. The location of the project and the depth of the pipe (more than 8 feet underground) has made this a big project which is further complicated by underground utility lines and conduits that the contractor has to work around.

”The Town has received several inquiries about this project. Town Manager Pat Finnigan said people think it is a Town project and they are wondering why this work is being done in the middle of peak tourism season. The Town Manager said this is not a Town project and the problem happened unexpectedly. She wants to assure people that the Town employees do everything possible to schedule projects so they do not create unnecessary disruption or inconvenience, but this particular work is time sensitive and needed to be done now.

“Work on the project continues Thursday and should be completed before the end of the day. The sidewalk will then need to be replaced. In order to keep traffic moving as smoothly as possible and maintain two-way traffic, a section of parking spaces on Main Street are being used as a travel lane. The Town Manager said she knows this is disruptive and frustrating, especially this time of year and she appreciates everyone's patience. The contractor is working to complete the project as quickly as possible so the property owners can have their water and sewer service restored, and life on Main Street can return to normal.”
