Camden Lions make top shelf donation to Windjammers hockey

Sat, 01/13/2018 - 10:00pm

The Camden Lions Club have donated $1,000 to the Camden Hills Windjammer Ice Hockey Program at its December 5, 2017, meeting. Standing alongside his grandfather Lion Tom Christie, Cameron Christie, #8 for the Windjammers, spoke to the Lions about the hockey teams' needs and accepted the Lions' donation from King Lion Bob Oxton. The donation goes to support the hefty cost of ice time for the team, and the Lions wish the team well in their 2017/18 season.

The Camden Lions are a "family affair" for some in the Christie family. Navy veteran Tom Christie and his sons Jim and Chuck are active members of the Lions. Jim was also career Navy. One of Chuck's daughters is joining the Leos, the youth group sponsored by the Lions, which will extend the Christie family's Lion connections to the third generation.

In 2017, the Camden Lions Club celebrated 88 years of service to the community. Currently, the major source of Lions' revenue is the bin of donated recyclable bottles and cans at the Transfer Station. The Lions use this revenue to support the community. Some examples of the Lions' 2017 donations include college scholarships for students at Camden Hills, the Maine Blind Bowlers Association, the Maine Lions Sight and Hearing Association, Five Town Football, the Five Town Little League, CHRHS Hockey, and holiday baskets for those in need at both Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Camden Lions are also the unknown folks who put out the American flags around downtown Camden on patriotic holidays; put up and light the Christmas tree on the village green; and provide free cider, hot cocoa, and cookies at Christmas by the Sea. The Camden Lions spearheaded and maintain the downtown Veterans Memorial.

The Camden Lions Club is proud to be a part of Midcoast Maine and to assist community needs where possible. The Lions meet the first and third Tuesday of each month to share dinner at the Lions Club building on Lions Lane. Guests are invited to join the Lions for dinner. Contact membership committee chairs Jerry Stone (542-9064) or Bunnie Dunavent (236-9716).
