Camden Hills Regional High School cancels remainder of football season

Safety of student-athletes deciding factor

ROCKPORT – The announcement came today from the administration at Camden Hills Regional High School that the school has no choice after six years as a high school varsity program but to cancel the remainder of the season.

"After a careful and deliberate evaluation of the current status of our football program, the Five Town CSD and High School Administration has made the decision to cancel the remainder of our football season.," said Camden Hills Regional High School Principal Nick Ithomitis in an email received from Atletic Director Steve Alex.

That was the message delivered to the students, faculty and media today from the administration of Camden Hills Regional High School. To many it will come as a shock while to some it was expected, with the diminishing numbers of players.

Camden started its season with 27 players. Of them, 13 were freshmen; three were freshmen and sophomore girls. It is a game in which very few freshmen should be playing varsity games, given the size and experience on the field. That is the benefit of a junior varsity program.

Camden had cancelled its JV program for lack of players.

Ithomitis continued: "This was a difficult decision because so many people, especially the Five Town Football community, worked extremely hard to bring football to our school.  We are proud of our football players, coaches, parents, and fans. They did their best to make football an integral part of our athletic program.  Unfortunately, dwindling numbers of players have created a serious safety issue, and we are simply not willing to put any more students at risk. "

The school’s responsibility is to the students and with that thought in mind the safety of the students took priority.

"We are very appreciative of the support provided by the Maine Principals’ Association and the Little Ten Football Conference," said Ithomitis. "The MPA and conference schools did everything they could to help us sustain our program. Although many people will be disappointed with our decision, we hope they understand and respect our need to protect the safety of our students."
