Camden Hills Homecoming tremendous success on and off the field

Windjammers go undefeated at Saturday’s homecoming
Sat, 10/10/2015 - 8:15pm

ROCKPORT –  Camden Hills Regional High School was on fire today for their Homecoming Celebration.  There were seven games played and a 5K that was run this morning.

When the day was complete Camden Hills teams had won all seven games today and outscored their opponents 32-5 on the day with all three varsity games being shutouts.

The varsity field hockey, girls soccer and boys soccer were covered today and the stories and photos from the day are included.

Field Hockey
Camden Hills 2, Erskine Academy 1,… The Windjammer girls controlled the majority of play on the field Saturday as Erskine Academy used their speed to offset the outstanding stick work displayed by Camden Hills today.

However, the defense of Molly Tobin as the last defense before the keeper helped to keep all but two shots from even reaching the goalie Jenna Stearns.

Hilary Merrifield continued her impressive play recently with both goals for the Windjammers. Her first was scored at 17:04 of the first half when Merrifield found herself with one shot, and it was headed wide when it went off an Erskine player and into the net for the 1-0 lead.

In the second half, Merrifield struck again, this time at 28:18 on an unassisted goal with a perfectly placed ball into the far corner.

Jenna Stearns was in goal for the Windjammers where she had two saves on two shots to record the shutout.  Hannah Burns was in goal for Erskine Academy where she had three saves on five shots. Camden held the advantage in penalty corners 10-2.

With the win Camden Hills goes to 7-6 on the season with one game left in the regular season when they host Winslow Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 3:30.

Currently, the Windjammers field hockey team is in eighth place in the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings in Class B North. The top 10 teams make the playoffs and Camden Hills with the one game they have left will most likely remain in eighth place regardless of the outcome.

Field Hockey prelims start Oct. 17. If the standings stay the same, the Windjammers will host John Bapst of Bangor.

Girls Soccer
Camden Hills 6, Lawrence 0… The Camden Hills girls soccer team continued its dominance of the pitch, regardless of the opponent this season.

Saturday the Windjammers started fast and ended strong scoring six goals and keeping the ball on the Erskine side of the half the whole game. Lawrence finished the game with one shot on goal.

With the win, the Windjammers go to 11-0-1 on the season. Lawrence falls to 2-10.

Camden coach Meredith Messer said today that this was the best team skill wise she has ever coached. She said the girls are all good friends, loose, fun and good. She went on to say that she has had to coach at a higher level that she has not been able to coach at before because of the skill levels of this team. High praise from a coach who has been around for some years and coached some excellent players over the years.

Kassie Krul led the Windjammers with two goals. She scored the first at 0:58 into the game unassisted. The second came at 39:08 in the second half on a beautifully placed pass from Eliza Roy for the assist, that Krul just crushed it into the upper right corner of the goal with a shot hit so hard the keeper could not even move before the ball was over her head and in the goal.

Eliza Roy scored at 29:46 with an assist from Abby Chamberlain. Less than a minute later Bryn Anderson scored with an assist from Charlotte Messer. That finished the first half with the Windjammers up 3-0.

In the second half, along with the goal from Krul to end the scoring, Charlotte Messer scored unassisted at 1:41 into the half. Izzy Gutheinz scored at 12:35 and that was also unassisted.

Jana Spieker had one save on one shot to record the shutout, her sixth of the season, for the Windjammers. Her counterpart for Lawrence was Kayla Spencer, who had 12 saves on 18 shots from Camden Hills. The Windjammers held the edge in corner kicks 1-0.

The Windjammers have two games left, both on the road next week. Tuesday, Oct. 13 they travel to Messalonskee of Oakland and Thursday, Oct. 15 they travel to Mt. Ararat of Topsham. The Preliminary games start Oct. 23 with teams No. 1-6 getting a bye to the quarterfinals which start Oct. 27.

Camden Hills is in first place in the Heal Point Standings for Class A North. Currently, Bangor High School is in second place with a season finale against Scarborough, who is No. 1 in Class B South.

Boys Soccer
Camden Hills 3, Mt. Blue 2… This game was very close in the first half as neither team could put a run together for a score.

After a scoreless first half, Kieran Lydon creased the net at 34:34 of the second half off an assist from Noah Heidorn for the 1-0 lead. That broke the ice and allowed Lydon to score his second goal at 24:15 assisted by Morgan Mercier. The third and final goal was scored by Josiah Krul at 22:24 with an assist from Andy Gross.

Lucas Boetsch had one save on one shot for the shutout for the Windjammers. Joe Bowering was in goal for the Cougars where he had 13 saves on 27 shots from Camden Hills. The Windjammers had eight corner kicks to one for the Cougars.

"The boys ground out a good victory today in front of an outstanding crowd at Homecoming,” said Camden Hills coach Ryan Hurley. “Mt. Blue played us tough the first half, and we came out second half and executed offensively much better. It's a good win and was an awesome day of soccer at Camden Hills.”

Hurley continued, “I had the opportunity to watch our Freshman team defeat a very good Mt. Ararat Team 8-2, the JV's played great and defeated Mt. Blue 4-1 and then of course the encore was the varsity game. The whole program is in great shape, and it was awesome to have so many positive supporters there today! On to Tuesday and a Messalonskee team that will surely be a stiff test."

Camden Hills is in third place in the Heal Point Standings for Class A North with an 8-2-2 record. Lewiston is in first with a 12-0-0 record. Just like the girls the boys have two games left, both at home to finish the regular season. Camden will play Messalonskee Tuesday, Oct. 13 and Mt. Ararat Thursday, Oct. 15.

Homecoming 5K fundraiser
The Camden Hills Cross Country team held their Annual 5K Fundraiser at Camden Hills Regional High School Saturday.

The race, which was organized to raise funds to build a new 5K course at the high school, was held on the current cross country course. The course circles around playing fields and into the woods between the high school and Ashwood School, finally ending on the track in front of the new bleachers.

The runners enjoyed being able to race on the trails rather than on the roads, giving this race an entirely different feel and atmosphere.
