Camden — Eleanor C. Linton, obituary

CAMDEN — Eleanor C. Linton, 96, of Camden, died Oct. 26, 2012, at Pen Bay Medical Center. Born in Bangor Jan. 20, 1916, she was the daughter of Dr. Herbert Thorndike Clough and Frances French Clough. She was a 1933 graduate of Bangor High School and in 1937, graduated from Mount Holyoke College. She also held graduate degrees from both the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, N.C., and the University of Maine at Orono. For a number of years, she taught at the Winchester-Thurston School in Pittsburgh, Pa., and at Linden Hall Junior College in Lititz, Pa.

During World War II, Eleanor served in the U.S. Naval Reserve as an officer instructor at the WAVES Training Center at Hunter College, and later as housing officer with the Engineering Corps at Miami, and later at Key West, Fla.

In 1946, she joined the New York Telephone Co. in New York City and served there on the engineering staff until her retirement in 1971.

In 1971, she retired to Camden with her husband, Alan E. Linton, and wintered in Sun City, Ariz. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Camden, the Mount Holyoke Club of Central Maine, the American Association of University Women, WAVES National and Maine WAVES, Unit 41, and the Megunticook Golf Club.

In 1996, her husband died. She is survived by her nephews, Henry Mueller of Boulder, Colo., David Clough of South Freeport and Peter Clough of Albuquerque, N.M.; her nieces, Patricia Isenberg of Richmond, Va., Susan Francis of Gray, Frances Beltz of Sedonna, Ariz., and Elizabeth Marcum of Pacific Grove, Calif.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. at Anderson Inn at Quarry Hill, with the Rev. Kevin Pleas officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in the Maine Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
