Call For Presenters: 8th Annual “Working on the Water”

Tue, 08/08/2017 - 12:00pm

ROCKLAND — The organizers of Working on the Water are seeking fishermen and other mariners to participate in our annual gathering of an afternoon of tales, poems, and songs about the experiences of people who make their living working on the water. This is a great opportunity to let interested people know about the challenging, rewarding and unique work you do or once did. In the past we've heard from lobster- and other fishermen, captains and crew of a wide variety of tugboats, pilot boats, ferries, and windjammers, and retired Naval, Coast Guard, and Marine Patrol officers. Last year we heard about the work of a registered nurse who travels to islanders on the mission m/v Sunbeam.

This event is patterned after the Fisherpoet's Gathering in Astoria, Oregon, and has spawned a similar event in Portland Maine called Voices of the Sea, which is sponsored by the Maine Maritime Museum. Each presenter has fifteen to twenty minutes to share their experiences – through stories, poetry, or songs. All material must be original and geared for family entertainment. Local folkmusician and skipper
Gordon Bok will host and play a song or two.

This year's Working on the Water takes place Saturday, November 11 at 1:00 p.m. at Rockland's Sail, Power, and Steam Museum. If you'd like to share your experiences, please contact us at kathy@timberheadmusic.com or by calling 207-236-2707. If you'd just like to come listen, it's $5 at the door for the event plus a tour of the unique treasures at the Sail, Power, and Steam Museum located at 75 Mechanic St in Rockland.
