Busline teams punch tickets to Championship Saturday

Two Mariner teams headed to large school championships

The Busline League basketball season continued Thursday, Jan. 22 for middle school basketball players as semifinalists hoped to pick up that extra win to punch their tickets to Championship Saturday, to be held Saturday, Jan. 24.

The small school championship will be played at Bath Middle School with the boys tipping off at 1 p.m. and the girls at 3 p.m. The large school seventh grade championships will be held at Boothbay Region Elementary School with the girls starting at 9:30 a.m and the boys at 11:15 a.m. The large school eighth grade championships will also be held at Boothbay Region Elementary School, after being moved from Oceanside East, with the boys at 1 p.m. and the girls at 2:45 p.m.

The championship contests will be: 

Small School Boys: #1 Searsport versus #1 Nobleboro
Small School Girls: #1 Searsport versus #1 Woolwich
Large School 7th Grade Boys: #1 Troy Howard versus #2 Medomak
Large School 7th Grade Girls: #1 Medomak versus #2 Boothbay
Large School 8th Grade Boys: #1 Oceanside White versus #2 Lincolnville
Large School 8th Grade Girls: #1 Boothbay versus #2 Oceanside Blue

Boys Basketball:
Large Schools Eighth Grade: 

Oceanside 52, Troy Howard 36… At Thomaston, The No. 1 Oceanside boys eighth grade basketball team is heading to Boothbay Saturday, Jan. 24 for the Busline League large school championship after eliminating No. 4 Troy Howard of Belfast Thursday at Oceanside West 52-36.

Thursday the Mariners took a 9-4 first quarter lead, but built a 27-13 advantage heading into the halftime break and never looked back taking a 42-26 lead into the final stanza where they easily took the win.

Scoring for the Mariners were Cooper Wirkala with 19 points; Jack Lombardo 11; Isaiah Malloy 10; Amos Henderson eight; and Jaden Martin four.

The Mariners were 5-of-7 (71 percent) from the foul line and had three 3-pointers, all from Lombardo.

For Troy Howard, Andrew Akles paced the Lions with 17 points; Max Lewis eight; Wilder Magruder five; Nathaniel Johnson four; and Grady Doolan two.

The Lions were 4-of-6 (67 percent) from the foul line and had four 3-pointers, three from Akles and one from Magruder.

Lincolnville 58, Medomak 39… At Lincolnville, the No. 2 seeded Lincolnville Lynx never trailed in beating No. 3 seed Medomak 58-39

Lincolnville scorers were led by Michael Kremin (19 points), Zach Markowitz (18), Ionuts Lodge (11), Noah Lang and Carson Whitney (four each) and Trey Gilson (two).

Medomak was led by Nathan Emerson (18 points), Tristan Devault (five), Nick Daniels and Kevin White (four each), Alex Clevette (three), Alden McLain and Alec Coughlin (two each) and Chris Bowman (one). 

The Riverhawks were 5-of-14 (36 percent) from the foul line.

Girls Basketball:
Large School Eighth Grade:

Oceanside Blue 42, Oceanside White 35… At Thomaston, The battle of the Oceanside girls eighth grade teams came down to a semifinal matchup with No. 2 Oceanside Blue coming out with a 9-0 lead in the first quarter that No. 3 Oceanside White could not quite bounce back from, never taking the lead away as Blue went on to win the game 42-35 to advance to the Busline League championship game Saturday in Boothbay.

Blue took a 12-6 first quarter lead and a 22-11 advantage into the halftime break. White made a good run to close the gap to a 29-24 lead for Blue at the end of three quarters, but Blue held their lead throughout the fourth quarter to capture the win.

Scoring for the Oceanside Blue team were, Kalli Grover with 14 points; Kassidy Robinson and Hope Butler 13 each; and Annaliese Poisson two.

Blue was 8-of-16 (50 percent) from the foul line and had two 3-pointers, one each from Grover and Robinson. Robinson’s came at the buzzer to end the game.

For White, Morgan Heal had a team high 14 points; Chloe Jones nine; Hannah Moholland six; Sara Dorr five; and Abby Veilleux one.

White was 4-of-16 (25 percent) from the foul line and they had one 3-pointer from Jones.
