Posted:  Wednesday, June 28, 2017 - 8:00pm

Most parents want their children to be respectful, help out at home, and succeed at school. Active Parenting, First Five Years is an exciting program offered by Broadreach Family and Community Services to help mothers and fathers with children ages 5 and younger to become more effective parents. Active Parenting First Five Years classes begin on Tuesday, July 18, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Belfast Head Start, at 275 High Street in Belfast. The class includes four two-hour sessions held on July 18, 25, August 1 and 8.

The class teaches parents how to raise children using encouragement, building self-esteem, and creating relationships based upon active listening, honest communication, and problem solving. Parents learn the importance of offering children choices in order to avoid power struggles, plus, parents develop and improve their own nonviolent discipline methods. Additional topics covered include: how to use mindfulness techniques, teach children how to self-soothe, and understanding how a child’s brain develops.

The program is open to all parents and caregivers of children from birth to age 5. Child care is provided. The class is offered to parents at no cost through the generosity of grant funds provided by the Maine Children’s Trust. Broadreach’s expertise in parent education reaches back over 25 years and includes other offerings such as: Kids First Program, Active Parenting for Ages 5-12, and Nurturing Fathers Program.
