Breeding bird walks and surveys with Medomak Land Trust

Thu, 06/02/2016 - 9:45pm

The public is invited to join resident ornithologist and Medomak Valley Land Trust board member John Guarnaccia on a weekly survey of breeding birds throughout the watershed, Saturday mornings at 7 a.m., June 13 to July 9.  Beginners are welcome and binoculars can be provided upon request.

In the midst of major changes to the breeding bird community, the walks will help document the breeding birds of our area and identify important habitats to conserve. Additionally, the survey data that is collected contributes toward long term studies of bird populations on a nationwide scale. Each week, attendees will visit different habitat types and preserves throughout the watershed.

As part of this series, Medomak Valley Land Trust will host the second bird walk of the series on June 11 on the trails made by Peg Hobbs and Leo Karczewski at their property in Washington. The Hobbs and Karczewski property includes a beaver bog that has been expanding in recent years, and thanks to the efforts of the landowners to create and maintain habitat, has continued to attract an increasing diversity of birds.

Participants are invited to meet at Prescott Memorial School in Washington, at 100 Waldoboro Road. The school is short distance from the property and participants will begin the bird walk at the school parking lot. To receive a list of locations for future bird walks, individuals can call the office at 832-5570 or email info@medomakvalley.org
