CAMDEN — Betty Brearley Johnson, 91, died peacefully on Nov. 25, 2016, at the Sussman House in Rockport.

Betty was born July 1, 1925, in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of Harry and Lillian Brearley. She graduated from South High School, Class of 1942 and was a 1946 graduate of Clark University in Worcester, where she majored in chemistry. She married Arthur R. Johnson, of Worcester, Mass., on Oct. 29, 1949.

Betty and Arthur moved to Maine in 1998 after long careers in the Washington, D.C., area. Betty was employed as a chemist, school librarian and later, as an editor for the Association of Official Analytical Chemists of Rockville, Md.

Betty had a great love for art and crafts, especially fabric arts. She always had the next idea in her head for creating a landscape in fabric. She greatly enjoyed the people and inspiration of Coastal Quilters of Camden. She also did charity knitting caps for chemotherapy patients and newborns at Pen Bay Medical Center.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; and her brother, Robert Brearley and his wife, Gertrude, of Post Falls, Idaho.

She is survived by her son, David Johnson and his wife, Christine, of Timonium, Md.; and her daughter, Karen Martin and her husband, Peter, of Camden, Maine. She is also survived by her nephew, Steven Brearley and his wife, Donna, of Moscow, Idaho; and several great-nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Sussman House for their dedicated care of Betty during the last few weeks of her life.

A memorial service will be held next summer at Nativity Lutheran Church in Rockport and will be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Jackson Laboratory, 600 Main Street, Bar Harbor, ME 04609.

Arrangements are with Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
