ROCKPORT — Bernard Guerlain, 90, formerly of Rockport, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2016, at Rose Monahan Hospice House on Coe's Pond in Worcester, Mass. Bernard was born in Les Mesnuls, France, into the renowned Guerlain Perfume family, the eldest son of Raymond Guerlain and Marie Jacquin Guerlain.

After attending Eton College, he served in the French occupation forces in Germany with Les Chasseurs d'Afrique during World War II. He emigrated to the United States in 1946 to attend New York University.

He married Fanny Gaillet, also from France, in Larchmont, N.Y. Together, they raised eight children in Larchmont and Redding, Conn., and established Special Papers Inc., importing and distributing French artistry papers.

The family vacationed each August on Block Island, R.I., where Bernard augmented the sailing program at the Block Island Club by importing a fleet of 420-class racing sailboats from France. He retired to Rockport and Nokomis, Fla., becoming a volunteer driver for medical patients and their family members. He proudly wore every gallon pin he earned donating blood to the American Red Cross and supported many worthy charities. He was devoted to his family and loved animals, playing bridge, playing tennis and collecting art.

Bernard was predeceased by his wife, Fanny; and his eldest daughter, Elisabeth. He leaves behind three sons, John-Nicholas Guerlain of Englewood, Colo., Thierry Guerlain of Montpelier, Vt., and Naples, Fla., and Peter Guerlain of Boonton, N.J.; four daughters, Claude Guerlain of Northborough, Mass., and Block Island, R.I., Natalie Denoyer of Wilmington, Del., Caroline Feroleto of Easton, Conn., and Stephanie Guerlain of Charlottesville, Va.; as well as 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. He was also predeceased by two of his younger brothers, Jean-Loup and Pascal; and is survived by his two sisters, Dickey and Sabine; and three brothers, Hubert, Georges and Eric, all of France.

A celebration of his life will be held on July 23 in Camden and will be announced.
