Belfast goats on the lam, take two

BELFAST — Belfast Police responded to the scene of their second goat caper this year, when they were called to Belfast’s Rail Trail to collect two escapee goats Aug. 14.

Sergeant Daniel Fitzpatrick said he had just left jury duty selection, when the report came in, and knew the goats in question right away.

Fitzpatrick corralled the same goats during an April escape down the same trail.

The duo, named Louis and Mowgli, live at a residence near the High Street entrance to the trail, which runs along the Passagassawakeag River.

They were spotted in the garden of a nearby resident, who reported the furry runaways to police.

Fitzpatrick said the duo were easily rounded up this time.

“I think by now they probably know who I am,” he said of his time with the goats.

We open the back of the [cruiser] door and they hop in, and fortunately we didn’t have to drive around with them much today,” he added.

Fitzpatrick said that neither he nor the owners could figure out where the goats are escaping from, even after examining their enclosure.

For now the goats are safely back at home, and their friendship with Belfast Police is stronger than ever.
