BELFAST — Questions about what method of birth control is best for you, or whether you qualify for free care through the state's Limited Family Planning Benefit? Drop by the Belfast Family Planning community Open House on December 7 from 4-6 p.m.

The event offers a chance for community members to meet their local family planning providers, get a tour of the clinic at 147 Waldo Ave., enjoy refreshments, and find out more about the services Maine Family Planning provides.

Maine Family Planning nurse practitioner Julie Jenkins, a named plaintiff in a joint lawsuit challenging the state's ban on qualified medical professionals administering abortion care, will be on hand to answer questions about the case and how overturning the so-called "physician-only" law would increase healthcare access for women all across the state.

"Maine's burdensome physician-only law has forced me to send away patients in desperate situations, even though I am trained, qualified, and more than willing to provide the care they need," said Jenkins, in an news release. "It's not fair that women are forced to jump through hoops to exercise their legal rights. Getting rid of this law would meaningfully expand abortion access for women across this state and nationwide."

Belfast is also one of several sites where Maine Family Planning will soon be expanding its Open Door transgender health program. Staff members will be able to explain what services are available through this program, including hormone transition therapy and self-injection instructions and supplies.
