ROCKLAND — Two Bangor residents who were arrested after a joint investigation between the Rockport Police Department and Maine Drug Enforcement Agency for supplying drugs to a woman who later died, made their initial court appearance April 21 for a bail hearing.

Charles Michaud, 52, and Melody Paul, 36, appeared before Judge Susan Sparaco in Knox County Unified Court. Michaud has been charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin and fentanyl. His bail was set at $10,000 cash. Paul is facing a charge of trafficking in heroin and fentanyl and her bail was set Friday at $500 cash.

Both remain in the Knox County Jail in Rockland.

Michaud was previously convicted in 2007 in Caribou Superior Court for unlawful furnishing of scheduled drugs, according to court records.

According to the affidavit filed in court by the MDEA, agents were first contacted by Rockport Police the morning of April 6 regarding the suspected overdose of Georgianna Zercie at her residence on Cross Street in Rockport. At the scene, police found needles and a baggy containing white/tan powder.

Zercie was identified as the sister of Michaud, according to the affidavit.

Police seized Zercie’s phone as evidence and discovered that she had used Facebook to communicate with Michaud and Paul about buying drugs from them. Zercie agreed to send $300 to the couple through a MoneyGram for a gram and a half of drugs.

Michaud and Paul were viewed picking up the money at a Walmart in Brewer, according to video surveillance cameras. They were then seen leaving the business and getting into another car in the parking lot, in which police believe they obtained the illegal drugs from a dealer, according to the affidavit.

Rockport Police Chief Randy Gagne said in an earlier news release that the investigation is ongoing. Investigators are waiting on autopsy results and further charges may be pending.
