ROCKLAND — Athene "Arlene" Flanders, 90, died May 20, 2015, at Pen Bay Medical Center, following a period of declining health.

Born in Portland on Aug. 22, 1924, she was the daughter of Leon and Cora Lufkin Eaton.

Arlene came to this area when she was 7 months old. Raised by Frank Judson and Florence Crouse, she lived in Owls Head until the age of 14. She attended local schools.

On June 18, 1943, she married Walter Leroy Flanders in Rockland. The couple made their home in Rockland since that time. Leroy died Oct. 5, 2003.
In earlier years, with her husband, Arlene enjoyed whittling miniature wooden animals. She also enjoyed crocheting and collecting salt and pepper shakers.

Arlene enjoyed a life-long friendship with Vina Proctor. She was particularly grateful for the care and support provide by her son, Brian, and her daughter-in-law, Brenda, as well as that of her nieces and their husbands, Barbara and Calvin Roberts, and Linda and Wesley Knight, which provided Arlene the opportunity to live independently in her home until just a few days ago. She was saddened at the death of her niece, Barbara Roberts, on Dec. 28, 2014.

Arlene is survived by one son, Brian Flanders and his wife, Brenda, of Warren; three grandchildren, Tabby Flanders and her companion, Brian Campbell, of Auburn, Katherine Flanders Bentley of Rockland, and Amber Rupe and her husband, Travis, of Georgia; four great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Zoey, John and Robert, as well as extended family members.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit Thursday, May 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland, where a funeral service will be held  Friday, May 29 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Achorn Cemetery on Old County Road in Rockland.
