ROCKLAND — Armand A. Plourd, 76, died peacefully on April 20, 2016, surrounded by his loving family, at Sussman House in Rockport.

Born in Rockland on June 17, 1939, he was the son of Alfred S. and Evelyn J. Pitts Plourd. While growing up in Rockland, he attended local schools and was a 1957 graduate of Rockland High School. He attended Boston University.

Armand married his classmate, Helen Doherty, in Rockland, where they have made their home more than 55 years. For many years, the Plourd's have enjoyed spending the winter in Plant City, Fla.

For many years, he owned and operated Gregorys Clothing Store in Rockland. He also worked several years as personnel safety director at Dragon Products in Thomaston; as well as serving as bookkeeper for Al's Hairdressing Salon.

Always active in the community, Armand was a past member of the School Administrative District 5 School Board; a past president and director of the Rockland Golf Club and a past president and director of the Kiwanis Club of Rockland. He was a Third Degree Knight and life member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 136, in Rockland; a Knox County Hospital incorporator; a Pee Wee Basketball coach with the Rockland Recreation Department; a member of the Penobscot Wheelman and the Camden Snow Bowl.

Armand was extremely civic minded and passionate about the city in which he lived. He stayed busy lending his expertise to many organizations including, serving as director of both the Maine Merchants Association and Rockland District Nursing. He was an incorporator of Heritage Savings Bank and Penobscot Bay Medical Center; a member and director of Limerock Council, Knights of Columbus, Rockland Chamber of Commerce and treasurer of Rockland Peewee Basketball League.

Armand's passion for the game of golf was born out in his 57-year membership and support of the Rockland Golf Club and his memberships at both The Meadows and The Lakes Golf Clubs in Plant City, Fla. He particularly enjoyed his work as a ranger at the Samoset Resort Golf Course, and was a member of the Seniors Golf Association.

He was a Communicant and active member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Rockland and St. Clement's Catholic Church in Plant City, Fla.

Armand was a loving husband of 55 years and a great father to his children, Mark, Stephanie, Jay and Jamie.

He and Helen relished many years of golfing, competing against each other around the states of Maine and Florida. He was a Class B Champion at the Rockland Golf Club and winner of several other tournaments, along with one memorable hole in one. He especially enjoyed playing golf with his twin sons, Jay and Jamie, watching them compete in school matches and at the Rockland Golf Club. He also  took great pleasure in playing with his children as adults, along with his grandson, Connor. He was always great at giving tips to help anyone improve their game, and he was very proud to learn that his grandson enjoyed the game as much as he did.

Hunting in Bingham and Knox counties, with his son, Jay, and friends, Roger and Anna Sorrent, was another enjoyable experience for Armand. Many family trips were had, skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain and the Camden Snow Bowl, with Armand filming every minute.

He looked forward to playing in the Central Maine Seniors Golf Association at many courses with his friends, Chandler Woodman, Tom Jacobs, Bill Bachofner and Bob Sommers. They would always enjoy Friday lunches at the Elks Lodge and be guaranteed many laughs on Armand's behalf. He was a man of great wit. Even in the multiple times he was hospitalized, he managed to make everyone laugh no matter what was happening. His positive attitude and sense of humor will certainly be missed, but never forgotten.

He was extremely proud and supportive of all his children and their accomplishments; teaching them to never give up, work hard and respect others.

As a local business man and owner of a clothing store, Armand took great pride in his appearance. His demeanor was that of a genuine gentleman. He will be remembered as a man of class.
