Anastasia Fischer: Why I am running for Rockport Select Board

Fri, 06/09/2017 - 9:00am

I am running for Rockport Select Board because I believe that we need a more diverse board, with a fresh perspective, to better represent our community. In my professional work I bring diverse groups of people together to create effective solutions that help everyone involved. I believe my experience will help our town government be more efficient and be able to complete projects with real results. Rockport residents need to feel that their voices are being heard and there is someone on the board who understands how to unite people with different objectives.

I also feel strongly that we need a clear, shared vision for our future. The town charter is over 13 years old, and needs not only to be updated with the physical things that need to be addressed, but with a vision of what kind of place we want Rockport to be in 10, 20, and 50 years. A clear vision of who we want to be will help us build a strong plan against which we can prioritize the initiatives we undertake, and rationalize the expenses we incur. As the demographics of our town get gradually older the need to look at what will make the town vital and enduring gets increasingly more important. While we have a lot to do in this area, I am optimistic about the possibilities ahead of us, and hope we can work together to achieve great things.

Finally, I would like to strongly encourage you to vote, particularly those who are under 65. Our voting records show very poor turn out in the polls for those people most effected by the long-term decisions of the town: families with kids. One of the reasons I chose to run for office is because I feel it is my civic responsibility, my turn, to actively participate in the well-being of my community. One of the simplest ways for each one of us to do this is by voting. I urge you to get to the polls in Rockport on June 13, and if you want to see a new face with a fresh perspective please consider voting for me.
