ROCKLAND — Alice H. Hedrich, 87, beloved wife and mother, died March 31, 2013, Easter Sunday, surrounded by her family, at Maine Medical Center in Portland from complications of Alzheimer's disease.

Born in Rockland Jan. 24, 1926, she was the daughter of Vernal and Ara Haskell Hall. She attended local schools and was a 1944 graduate of Rockland High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society and was an active participant in the basketball program.

On June 17, 1945, she married Francis D. Hedrich at St. Bernard's Catholic Church. As a young woman, Alice worked for a brief time with a local bank and also with the Department of Social Services. Alice's greatest vocation and accomplishment was as a caring, devoted mother and grandmother, raising eight children. She and Francis have resided in Rockland their entire married life.

Alice was a longtime active member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church, where for many years she taught Catechism to many children. She was an active member of the Daughters of St. Bernard, served as president of the Rockland Junior Women's Club, and for many years served as a volunteer at Pen Bay Medical Center.

An avid golfer, she was a longstanding member of the Rockland Golf Club, where she had two hole-in-ones. She greatly enjoyed participating in many golf championships, having won the Athleen McRae Cup in 1996. She also loved to participate in the Leah B. Robinson Tournament, as she and Leah were close friends. Alice nurtured many friendships in golf clubs, expressly the Seven Springs Golf & Country Club in Florida, where the Hedrich's wintered many years. Before beginning winters in Florida, she took great pleasure in spending time on the ski slopes.

Predeceased by two brothers-in-law, Winfred Hedrich and Richard Hedrick; Alice is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Francis D. Hedrich of Rockland; her children and their spouses, Mark Hedrich and Linda Rose of Union, Loretta and Dana Little of Rockland, David and Charleen Hedrich of Warren, Michael and Paula Hedrich of Nashua, N.H., Christine and Ervin Curtis of South Thomaston, Josephine and Elliot Mednick of Salem, N.H., Peter and Michelle Hedrich of Fredericksburg, Va., and Homer "Jack" and Susan Hedrich of New Gloucester; 14 grandchildren and their spouses, Jonathan Little, Dr. Julie and Ryan Hurley, Andrew and J'Anna Hedrich, Matthew Hedrich, Evan Hedrich, William Hedrich, Paul, Daniel and Caroline Curtis, Alexander Mednick, Leah Mednick, Jessica Hedrich, Megan Hedrich, and Chloe Hedrich; four great-grandchildren, Walker and Cole Hedrich, and twins Eva and Oren Hurley; two step-grandchildren, Alexander Kaufmann and his wife, Katherine, and Ariane Bowie; two brothers-in-law and their spouses, Ernest and Marlene Hedrick and Kenneth and Barbara Hedrick; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit Wednesday, April 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. A prayer service will begin at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, April 4, at 10 a.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church at 150 Broadway in Rockland. The Rev. Richard Malo will officiate. A reception will follow at the funeral home's 104 Limerock reception center. Private interment will be in Achorn Cemetery on Old County Road in Rockland.
