ROCKLAND — Albert I. Payson, 90, died Feb. 16, 2017, at Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.

Born in Owls Head on Oct. 6, 1926, he was the son of Harry I. and Ida Marshall Payson. He started school at the one room Ingraham Hill School. Albert began high school in Rockland with the class of 1945. His academic life was interrupted by his service with the U.S. Navy. He graduated from Rockland High School in 1947.

He married Audrey Hooper in Rockland on June 17, 1951. The couple made homes in Owls Head, Rockland and South Portland, and later returned to Rockland.

Albert lobstered out of Spruce Head for more than 20 years. He later worked 18 years as a machinist with General Electric Corporation in South Portland.

Albert's family said that although he was a man of few words, he could express his love for them through a simple touch.

He loved being on the water and enjoyed fishing trips with his son.

In addition to his wife of 65 years, Audrey of Rockland; Albert is survived by his son, Robert M. Payson of Rockland; his daughter, Janet Kemberling of South Portland; his sister, Vera Mathieson of Owls Head; four grandchildren, Nhare Payson, Molly Warren, Lindsy Fournier and Bryan Kemberling; and four great-grandchildren, Samuel, Nevaeh, Ryker and Luke; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 20, at 11 a.m. at Ingraham Cemetery on Freedom Drive in Owls Head. The Rev. Seth D. Jones will officiate.
