CAMDEN— Alan I. Carr, 77, passed away on July 31st, 2017, after a sudden and devastating heart attack. Alan was born in Camden, on September 30, 1939, and was the son of Sydney and Madlyn (Wing) Carr. A graduate of Camden High School, Class of 1958, Alan married his high school sweetheart, Jane Harmon, in 1961, the first couple to be married in the Vesper Hill Chapel. The couple have two children, Melissa Carr of Lincolnville and Portland, and Lucy Carr of Antibes, France, as well as two grandchildren, Valentine and Fiona Degiovanni of Antibes. Alan is also survived by his brother, Luke Carr, of Camden.

After high school, Alan went to Husson College in Bangor, graduating as Valedictorian of the Class of 1967. He began a career as an accountant, working for Ernst & Ernst, before entering the seafood business, initially exporting shrimp from Maine to Sweden and eventually managing a network of U.S. food brokers for Connors Brunswick. He loved working with fish and fishermen and hanging out on the working waterfront.

Most recently, Alan was one of the principals involved in Evolution Marine in Rockland, where he and three colleagues developed a revolutionary quiet, efficient, shaft system for boat propulsion. (The company was recently sold to Soundown in Salem, Mass.) Since selling that business, Alan spent much of his time happily tinkering with his accumulation of boats and antique cars, especially his prized 1952 Mercedes 220 Cabriolet, an award-winner in the recent 2017 Camden Classics car show. Never an idle soul, at the time of his death, Alan was busy restoring an old garage on Park Street in Camden to be a home for his collection.

Early in his career, Alan lived with his family in Yarmouth for a number of years before moving to Thomaston then eventually back home to Camden where he has been active and enthusiastic in the community for the past 30 years. He served on the board of the Camden Outing Club during fundraising for the first chairlift; former board member of Camden Y.M.CA; a member of the Rockport Boat Club; and the Midcoast Sports Car Club. Like his father and grandfather, Alan was a 32nd degree Mason. He held a special fondness for his two French granddaughters "the French Fries"; he also loved sailing, the outdoors, and always planning the next project. Alan looked forward to the regular Friday night "business meetings" with his Happy Hour buddies. He was the happiest spending time at the beach cabin in Northport with family and friends.

Alan's family was long prominent in the Midcoast community, and he was proud of his grandfather, Harry Carr, one of the founders of Adas Yoshuron Synagogue in Rockland. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by nieces, nephews and many cousins throughout the region, one of whom captured his essence in a lovely tribute: "From my earliest memory, Alan was a cousin who was fun to watch. He was always doing something INTERESTING. He had a "warmth of personality" that exuded from him. His voice carried that same warmth and when one's path encountered Alan's, one was assured a greeting that would bring smiles and laughter."

Calling hours will be held from 5-7PM, Friday, August 11, 2017 at the Long Funeral Home in Camden.
