CAMDEN — Camden Harbor last week was awash in what many would simply describe as “tiny sailboats,” but don’t think for a moment there was any less skill, fortitude, bravery and killer instinct among the group of young sailors competing July 15-16 in this year’s Northeast Regional Junior Olympic Regatta.

The 2015 Junior Olympic Regatta was hosted by the Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program, Camden Yacht Club and Lyman-Morse at Wayfarer Marine. In addition, dock space to make the regatta possible was donated by the town of Camden, at Steamboat Landing, Caroline Morong, Ann Bresnahan and Ann Montgomery.

Sailors from Maine and New Hampshire competed the Regatta, with the fleet totaling 110 boats and 168 sailors/skippers. From Maine, sailors came from Camden, Rockport, Rockland, North Haven and Islesboro, according to CYC Junior Sailing Program Director and Regatta Chairman Susan Conover.

She said the event took a year of planning.

“We started the process last August,” said Conover. “We had a core of nine volunteers during the year, meeting at least monthly. As the event got closer these nine volunteers worked many hours weekly. Hats off to Teresa Curtis, Allison Maguire, Becca Babb-Brott, Lisa Brott, Charlie Strout, Kim Daly, Duncan Matlack, Sam Zwecker and Todd Williams. In addition, during the two days of the event there were over 50 volunteers each day.”

Conover said that skippers arrived July 14 or 15 at the venue to register and launch boats. Prior to going into the water at large regattas such as this, there are daily coach and skippers’ meetings.

“It is here where the coaches and skippers (racers) understand the local operating procedures, review the rules/regulations and hear any specific concerns relating to Camden Harbor,” said Conover. “These required meetings are run by the head of the Race Committee. In our case for this regatta it was locals Sam Zwecker, Todd Williams, (both teachers from our local schools), Ry Hills and Tom Kiley, all of whom have extensive experience on the water and were also trained in race management prior to the event.”

U.S. Sailing also provided a judge and jury, to ensure the regatta was managed well. This faction also handled any protests that arose on the water.

Fog kept the fleet on shore on the morning of the first day of racing, July 15, and after waiting out the pea soup they headed out into the bay, where they were immediately faced with rapidly building winds, gusting to 25 knots from the north.

Conover said the racers were constantly challenged with the weather, which ranged from strong winds and fog to no wind and sunny skies.

“It takes skill to read the wind and its shifts, so this added to the success of the regatta,” said Conover.

The regatta was comprised of three different U.S. Coast Guard-permitted race course areas, which were approved prior to the event.

The Green Fleet, sailing in Optimists (7 feet, one person) was for first regatta racers. This iss meant to be an introduction to big regatta racing, and typically the fleet is smaller and the courses are shorter. There were 15 racers in this fleet, 12 of them local. The race course was managed by Ry Hills and Tom Kiley.

The Opti Champ Line, also sailing in Optimists, had a fleet of more than 40 boats. This fleet was divided into three groups based on age. They see typically see more challenging conditions and race courses. There were 11 local sailors on this line. This course area was managed by Todd Williams.

The third line was managed by Sam Zwecker. The 420 (14 feet, two-person boat) and laser (13 feet, one person) fleets shared this line. There were about 65 boats at this racecourse area. This is the highest level of racing that is offered for this age group. College students use these one-design class boats for racing as well. There were 15 local boats on this line.

Following two days of sailboat racing, the results are in!
