“Unlighting of the Candles” at Camden Church

Event has passed

The John Street United Methodist Church, 98 John Street, Camden, will measure the passing of the weeks of Lent by extinguishing candles.  During Advent the church lights one candle the first day of the advent season which remains burning while an additional candle is lit each week until Christmas day when the flames of five candles shine a bright light to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Nearing Easter, Christians feel the impending darkness of the death of Jesus.  So, on the first Sunday of Lent, March 9, a wreath of six candles will be burning and illuminating a wide space.  Candles are extinguished on successive Sundays, until Palm Sunday when only one flame remains burning.  By Good Friday, only the Christ Candle burns until it, too is put out and the church is symbolically in the darkness of Christ’s death.

The church invites the public to attend all services at the church. Sunday Worship is at 10:30 am, preceded by a welcome gathering at 10 am.  All are welcome.
