University College at Rockland to Host Information Session on Social Sciences Degree

Fri, 10/20/2017 - 11:45am

On Thursday, November 2nd from 3:00 - 4:00PM University College at Rockland will host UMA Professor James Cook, Ph.D. to discuss the Bachelor of Arts in Social Science from UMA offered at UC Rockland.

Social science begins with the insight that our “common sense” or “obvious” ideas about how human individuals, groups, communities and societies behave just don’t match up with the way they actually behave. Social science is a systematic way of getting past “common sense” to study the surprising cognitive and social lives of human beings.

Social Science is composed of many disciplines including: Anthropology, Communications, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.  This means that when you graduate with a social science degree, you’ll be able to study, understand and work with the many different kinds of context that affect our lives.

A career as a research assistant, market analyst or social worker is possible with a bachelor's degree in social sciences. Research assistants collect data and then analyze it and prepare reports. Market analysts assess the preferences and responses of consumers regarding everything from a company's product to the packaging and presentation. Social workers help their clients address issues so that their quality of life will improve. Because social science degrees relate to the study of human behavior, societies and other aspects of humanity, graduates are often also suited for jobs in public service.

Anyone, including current high school students and returning older adults, interested in the Social Sciences is welcome to attend.
