Two inch portrait of the sea

The Maine ocean at night has a much more subdued effect on you than you realize. In the daytime with the sun bouncing off the waves, it’s all good times and happy days. But under a sliver of a moon, with the washout of color, you start to wonder, what’s beneath the waves. Do I dare go any closer?

This miniature watercolor portrait, was done by Justin Stephens, who grew up in Camden. As a restless teen, he spent many a night by the ocean. It measures one and a half inches across and two inches long. It also comes with a tiny easel he handcrafted, along with a tiny palette and brush. This enchanting little art piece is one-of-a-kind and can be found at The Red Barn Marketplace in Lincolnville, open Wed to Sun, 8-4. ($25)

The painting and easel can also be interchanged and incorporated into its own “A Room of One’s Own” cigar box studio. ($50) See photos in the gallery.
