“In Search of the Oldest Apples in Maine” with John Bunker

Event has passed

On Tuesday, October 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the Belfast Free Library, apple expert John Bunker will share the history of apples in Maine, his adventures tracking down, identifying and preserving rare historic varieties, the renaissance of the hard cider industry, and an update on the Maine Heritage Orchard in Unity, which he founded.  Attendees who have their own apple trees are encouraged to bring fruit for identification.

John Bunker has been farming in Maine for the past 40+ years. Describing himself as a “fruit explorer,” Bunker tracks down rare and unusual fruit varieties to save and reintroduce in Maine. In 1984 he started Fedco Trees and has served as President of the Board at the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA), where he continues to serve as a board member and is the founder of MOFGA's Maine Heritage Orchard. He is the author of "Not Far From the Tree", a book outlining the history of apples in Palermo, Maine, which will be available for sale and signing, and a graduate of Colby College.

This free presentation is sponsored by the Belfast Free Library and the Belfast Co-op. The Library is located at 106 High Street in downtown Belfast. For additional information about this event, call the Library at (207) 338-3884 x10.
