Seafood Sustainability in the Gulf of Maine

Event has passed

On Tuesday, July 14 at 6:30pm at the Belfast Free Library, James Benson of the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) will give a presentation titled "Seafood Sustainability in the Gulf of Maine." Hhe’ll discuss seafood sustainability and cover some regional case studies that lend evidence to a changing environment, fluctuating species abundances, and the impacts on communities that depend on them. "The global seafood industry is highly complex and we sit amongst one of the most productive marine ecosystems on the planet." says Benson. This free event is sponsored by the Belfast Free Library and the community-owned Belfast Co-op.

Also, from 3:30-5:30pm at the Belfast Co-op, which is located at 123 High Street in downtown Belfast, there will be sustainable seafood sampling. James Benson and the Co-op's Meat Department Manager, Jeff Butler, will be out in front of the Co-op sharing some methods for preparing some of the under-utilized fish in the Gulf of Maine. They will be offering free samples and recipes for delicious sustainable seafood dishes.

James Benson is the Sustainable Seafood Project Manager at GMRI. He holds a Masters of Coastal Marine Resources Management from the University of California, Santa Barbara and has conducted research as a fish ecologist, scientific marine diver, and fisheries modeler. Previous to GMRI, he worked on open-ocean fish and shellfish farms harvesting and distributing products while developing methods to improve sustainability. In his current role, he evaluates regional fisheries to determine responsible harvest and manages the Culinary Partners program, working with chefs to educate staff and help them source local sustainable seafood year-round.
