Rising Oil Prices Highlight Need for Energy Efficiency

The cost of home heating oil in Maine has increased sharply, climbing 30 cents per gallon in the last month and 8 cents in the last week alone. Though the statewide average of $2.86 per gallon is still far lower than it was this time last year, the recent fluctuations serve as a reminder that the future outlook for oil prices is highly uncertain.

“This winter’s low fuel prices were like a reprieve,” says Brian Robinson, an Energy Advisor with Evergreen Home Performance.  “But there’s no reason to expect that oil prices will stay low.”

As a certified energy auditor, Robinson assesses homes and engineers home comfort and energy-saving improvements like air sealing and insulation. Savvy homeowners can leverage this year’s low oil prices and Efficiency Maine incentives to finance improvements that reduce their fuel use – and expenses – permanently.

“The beauty of improved energy efficiency is that the savings don’t depend on the price of fuel,” says Robinson.
