RAPA-ANN: The Short, Sad Life of a Maine Down-easter at The LIncoln Home

Event has passed

Monday, December 1, 3:00 to 4:00 pm

Local Historian, Bud Warren will speak about the ship Rappahannock that was ballyhooed as the largest sailing ship in the world when she was launched by Arthur Sewall in 1889. In her short life she experienced grounding, near-mutiny, typhoon, collision and fire.  Only two years old, she burned and sank at Robinson Crusoe’s Island in the Pacific.  Using Maine Maritime Museum’s archives of letters and accounts from her builders, operators and captains, this presentation covers her financing, constructions, operations and final disaster on a voyage around Cape Horn.
