Local Couple Tackles Tick Problem
ISLESBORO Mary and Brian Hauprich are no strangers to ticks. In fact, it's all they've been talking about for the last thirteen months.
"We wanted to provide folks with a safe, natural alternative to the tick repellents currently on the market," Brian explains. "We've researched, tested, gave out samples, sought feedback, and spent the time and resources to become a Maine Registered Tick Repellent. We've finally jumped through our last hoop, and now we're good to go!" And their product is selling like hotcakes.
Tick Me Off Maine® is a 100% of-the-earth product, harnessing natural tick-repelling oils inherent in a variety of botanicals. "Mary has been a professional gardener in Islesboro - prime tick territory - for over fifteen years. Once she started mixing up and using her botanical blend of oils, ticks stopped being a problem for our pets and us."
As the problem seems to be increasing in the northeast, the need for a natural tick repellent is clear. According to Mary, "I'm happier erring on the side of safety. Tick repellents laden with chemicals like DEET (diethyl toluamide) that are safe for 'roughly' 90% of the population they're made for, doesn't exactly give me the warm and fuzzies. Permethrin, another commonly used repellent, is extremely hazardous to our bees, our waters and the aquatic life within them. It's also fatal to cats! We don't feel 'solving the tick problem' by creating new, worse ones is acceptable."
By blending beeswax, Vitamin E oil and other essential botanical oils, they've created an effective alternative. It's safe and effective on pets, too! Tick Me Off Maine® is available on their website, www.tickmeoffmaine.com, and at local shops and nurseries in the area. (If your favorite shop doesn't carry it, ask them to!)
