The Lincoln Home Presents History of Education: Nobleboro

Event has passed

Monday, September 8, 3:00 to 4:00 pm

Carolyn Hardman, a retired teacher and member of the Nobleboro Historical Society will share with us the “History of Education in Nobleboro”. Come learn how in 1798 the town was on the verge of being fined by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for not providing schooling as had been mandated nearly 8 years prior.

Did you know that in 1798 a teachers duties included bringing a pail of water from a nearby well or spring and building fires each morning in the wood stove during the cold weather? Additionally each teacher developed a full program of learning for the various age groups of the students. All this for about $3.00 a week.

As the school system evolved in Nobleboro The Lincoln Academy was established and quickly became known as the prep school for Bowdoin College.

We welcome the public to our free weekly series of educational speakers.
