Hands-On Geology Course This Fall at URock

Tue, 08/04/2015 - 5:00am

University College at Rockland will offer GEY 101, Physical Geology, as a part of its fall course offerings.

This one semester course promises that you will never look at Maine's rocks and road-cuts in the same way again. With its bedrock exposed by recent glaciations, Maine is the ideal place to observe all of the ongoing processes of geological transformations.

The instructor, Gretchen Noyes-Hull, will lead this experiential class in the lab and in the field as students explore all formations from plate tectonics to erratic boulders and mineral quarries, Noyes-Hull holds a PhD in Oceanography and a Master of Science in Zoology, both from the University of Maine.

Noyes-Hull is very much a storyteller and believes that, "Every rock has its story."  And, she added, " I want every student to drive around Maine with a new geologic perspective."

It seems Noyes-Hull is successful at her teaching. As one student who took the course a few semesters ago noted, "I cannot pass by a road cut without wondering what that rock's story is."

The fall semester at URock begins Monday, August 31.  The GEY 101 class meets on Fridays at 9:00AM at the college.  Field trips will be built into the 15-week semester.
