Educators and potential educators can choose from a variety of teacher preparation programs and education courses offered at University College at Rockland for the fall 2014 semester, which begins in September. Courses are taught by University of Maine System instructors at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

This fall University College at Rockland will begin the first course in a new, graduate certificate program in Gifted and Talented Education. SED 530, “Educational Principles for Learners Who are Gifted”, will meet face to face at URock on three Saturdays in the fall (September 20, November 1 and December 13) from 9AM to 3PM. The remainder of the class will be delivered online.

A special graduate topics course, EDU 506, “Poverty and Education” will be also be offered at URock this fall. This course will combine face to face instruction with online learning. It will meet face to face at URock on three Saturdays in the fall (September 20, November 1 and December 13) from 9AM to 3PM. The remainder of the class will be delivered online.

According to URock director, Deborah Meehan, “This topic of income and the well-being of children, youth and families is pervasive. This course will be important to local educators’ understanding of how poverty affects children’s well-being.”  Meehan added, “This is a topic I hear repeated amongst local teachers and administrators and I am happy we can provide an academic forum where it can be explored.”

Many of the other education courses are delivered totally online. Students without high-speed internet access can participate in the courses at University College’s well-equipped computer lab.  Staff at the center offer support to all students who are new to online learning.

Students who wish to earn State of Maine teacher certification can enroll in Early Childhood (Birth to 5 Year), Elementary, Secondary and Special Education program pathways which can be completed in their entirety at University College at Rockland.

“Each semester we offer a greater number and variety of education courses online and at our center,” said Deborah Meehan, Director of University College at Rockland.  “We are excited to offer courses and programs in our community that will allow people with busy schedules to become certified as Maine teachers.”

Registration for fall 2014 is open and ongoing. Potential students are encouraged to schedule an advising session at the Center to discuss degree selection, credit transfer, financial aid and more.
