A week dedicated to celebrating the arts has long been a tradition at the Riley School. This year during the first week of May, Art Week at Riley featured over 25 workshops and field trips, coordinated by Arts Facilitator, Nina Devenney. Children were given the choice to participate in a wide selection of activities including woodworking, sculpture, fiber art, pottery, dance, visits to the Farnsworth Museum and Center for Maine Contemporary Art, and a tour of Center for Furniture Craftsmanship.

Guest artists from the community volunteered and led the following workshops: mixed-media art with Amy Arsenault of Colors Creative Arts in Portland, fiber art with Lori Schafer of Walking Wool Studio in Rockland, chair-making with parent Kenneth Kortemeier of the Maine Coast Craft School, pottery with Joe Devenney of Devenney Pottery in Jefferson, salsa dancing with Jen Woodman and Brooks Winner, installation field art with Alix Martin, modern dance with Riley alumna Cecile Bizet, hula hoop making with Zoe Grant of All-Star Hoops in Belfast, Cindy Dean of Paint It Shore-self (soon to open in Rockland), and collaborative musical paintings with Riley grand-parents Suzanne & Robert Navarro.

Riley facilitators brought their own art passions to the week introducing an array of mixed media, including paper quilling, found-object sculpture, landscape drawing, creative writing, paper doll design, and mandala art. The week culminated in a celebration, showcasing the children's creations and the knowledge and experience that they gained through engaging with the arts.

Riley is a progressive school where children learn by doing, questioning, and discovering. Small, multi-age classes provide opportunities to build strong, collaborative relationships and to nurture the unique talents of each individual. Accredited by the New England Association of School and Colleges and the Maine State Department of Education, the Riley School enrolls children ages 2-14.  Applications are currently being accepted for the 2017-18 school year.
