On Thursday, July 17th, Tall Pines sponsored a fundraiser for one of their own.

Becky Carter, an RN who has worked for The Commons for 10 years was recently in a car accident.  The driver of another vehicle crossed the yellow line and hit the vehicle Becky was riding in head on.  In the accident, Becky lost her husband and her daughter.  She was also injured as was her son-in-law.  The driver of the vehicle that hit them was uninsured and died in the accident as well.

This has been a trying time, to say the least, for Becky and her family.  A large number of her friends and coworkers at The Commons and a few members of The Residence’s staff felt terribly for what Becky has endured and wanted to find some way to help.  So the way they found was organizing a spaghetti supper at the Waldo County Shrine Club.

Several of Becky’s co-workers dedicated many hours apiece to making certain that preparations for the benefit were handled appropriately.  They also visited numerous area businesses to request donations they could use in the silent auction which accompanied the supper.  All were nervously anticipating the event.  Everyone involved wanted so much for it to be a success and to be something that would have a positive impact on Becky’s family during this terrible time.

The supper started at 5:00 p.m. at the Waldo County Shrine Club.  Within minutes, those who had volunteered to help found themselves very busy.  During the two hours that the dinner lasted, hundreds of people were served spaghetti.  The dessert table, which was covered with homemade treats brought in by Becky’s coworkers, was equally busy.  The silent auction tables had a steady flow of bidders, with numerous items going for more than their value.

There was a palpable sense of community at the supper.  Although the suggested donation was five to ten dollars per person for the supper, many people gave well beyond that amount.   For two hours, the shrine club was filled with people hugging, talking and sharing their concern for Becky and their own shock and sadness at learning of her loss.  While the supper was a success in how much money it raised for the family, it was equally successful in its human impact.
